10 Things I’ve Learned in 2017

2016 was the toughest year of my life. I remember telling myself over and over that 2017 is going to be my year. So far, this year has developed me into a stronger and brighter person. I’ve began doing some self reflection and I decided to share the things I’ve learned in 2017.

1.  You Owe no one an explanation for your choices

As we get older, we have to start making decisions for ourselves on our own. A lot of our decisions may disappoint others. It may even make others upset with us. However, IT IS OUR LIFE! We choose what ever we want to do with it. If someone doesn’t approve, that’s their problem not yours.  There is no need to explain your decisions to anyone. You only have one life. Live it to the FULLEST!

2. Friendships don’t always last forever

When I was a teenager I always said, “The current friends I have are the only friends I need for the rest of my life.” Boy, was I wrong. Life is constantly changing. The same applies with growth. As we grow, we sometimes outgrow the people who were once close to us. Not saying that we’re better than them, but sometimes our interests changes. The things that once made us close are no longer meaningful. If I could go back, I would have been more social in college and expanded my social circle to those who had similar mindsets as me.

3. Your mind is very powerful

I believe this is the most important on this list. I don’t think people realize how powerful our mind is. Our mind controls everything around us. Think about this: everything around you except mother nature is created by a human’s mind. That’s how powerful it is. Our minds control our mood, our energy, our beliefs, our bodies, the list goes on. If you use your mind wisely and think positive thoughts daily, it’ll change your whole life.

4. Following your heart is essential

This is one that we sometimes fail at. We get so caught up with fears and overthinking. Sometimes we get so caught up with the two and end up being miserable in a career, relationship, or situation in which we are unhappy. It’s time to let go of fear and get up and follow your inner GPS, which is your heart. It’s time to live your dreams. If you sit around and wait, it may never come to you. You have to take a stand and go after what ever it is that you want. Your heart will thank you for it.

5. You need alone time

What a lot of us don’t realize is that alone time is necessary as an adult. This is when you take the time to meditate and get to know yourself all over again. Take this time to do things that you are passionate about. Explore the world. Take a walk. Do something you’ve always wanted to do. Enjoy your alone time and become one with yourself. This is when you learn yourself all over again.

6. Reading is important

People always said “Reading is fundamental”, I used to disagree. However, after reading the book titled “The Secret”, I had a change of heart. Reading is very fundamental. It broadens your mind. It helps you escape from a one-dimensional world to broader horizons. When you read, you gain knowledge. Knowledge is key to success and happiness.

7. Put yourself first

This is one I struggled with. I use to do things to appease others. I used to go out with friends just because I didn’t want them to feel any type of way towards me. I use to do things for people even when my gut told me otherwise. I never made a decision based on me. Now I know true happiness comes from putting yourself before others. Once you learn how to do this, you will feel so much better about yourself. You will no longer feel drained when you are doing things you don’t want to do.

8. Love is essential

The saddest thing about this is the fact that it took me 25 years to learn this. In order to get the best from life, we have to give the best. The best thing in life is LOVE. We all have different definitions of love, so I will explain mine. Love is being kind to everyone around you. Love is being supportive and understanding. Love is spreading positivity in every way possible. Without love we are absolutely nothing. Be thankful, show gratitude, and give LOVE.

9. Faith is key

As I said in one of my earlier blogs, Faith is a major key to happiness. When you have Faith, you know that even though things aren’t where you’d like them to be, there’s still something better for you out there. Faith is believing what the eyes can’t see. Faith is knowing that you will be guided on the right path. Put your Faith in the universe and watch how you life changes.

10. Block out the noise

When you block out the noise you’re blocking out negativity. This can be toxic friendships, relationships, critics, and anything that is weighing you down or holding you back.  As you let go, you will realize how free you feel. You will feel the weigh lifted off your shoulders. You owe it to yourself to release negativity and block out the noise around you.

Now that 2017 is almost over, I can begin preparing myself for all the great things in store for me in 2018. I know the best is yet to come!

  1. Bravo!!! I think you really summed up a lot of the same things I learned this year as well. Some of my favorite points that I can certainly relate to & have to remind myself to practice are #s 4, 7, 8 & 10.
Because of the person I am, I struggle a lot with those, but thank you for the reminder. I look forward to you elaborating more on these topics. Wishing us a prosperous 2018!
